The girlfriend and I are in the process of booking our first vacation together, more then likely going to a resort in Jamaica or similar. I would LOVE to bring a tripod with me, just because I have been to a few resorts in the past the night lighting around the resort and in the pool is amazing.

Has anyone brought one to something like this before? What tripod did you buy/use?

its more then likely going to have to support my 400D+grip w/ my 24-105mm L

If you don't bring it, you'll regret it. I took a few sunset and sunrise shots in Florida that would not have happened without my tripod. It was the Marriott Orlando property and there were some amazing views. Great shots I wouldn't have missed for the world. Bring it.

haha oh no worries, this would be for the break in between :D

lol.

any recommendations on tripods? Its going to have to be fairly small/portable, and I don't really want to have to take out a mortgage to pay for it.

Yeah, I would bring it too.
I used the Velbon ULTRA LUXi L tripod, light and easy.

hmmm its hard to say, I just dropped $800 on another L lens, so not looking at spending ANYTHING haha but I know i will regret it. I guess my question is how much do I need to spend to make the tripod even worth buying. I know some of these cheap things are too wobbly and I would be too nervous to leave my camera on it and walk away

I have a Gitzo GT0530/Markins Q3 which I'd say is a super light weight and compact setup but at the same time would set you back several hundred dollars.

Maybe have a look at the Feisol brand: http://www.feisol.net/index.php
