Checking batteries

I've searched for this and not found anything.

Just wondered how people check their batteries. I have a few now and some crap out early on me. Does anyone routinely ditch their batteries and start afresh? When do you know they are past it?

I'm using BP511A's, some Canon, some 3rd party. In my experience some of the 3rd party batteries don't last too long

I don't change the battery until I see it is less than 1/2 power on the LCD. That helps it last longer.
