I just got my 2008 RRS catalog in the mail the other day!

According to their compatibility lists, if you have a battery grip on the 30D and 20D, the same L-plate can be used (BGE2-L30). However, if you do not have a battery grip, each camera has slightly different plate numbers. The 20D takes a B20D-L and the 30D takes a B30D-L. The pictures of these latter two plates show many similarities, but there are some differences.

The current 30D bracket will fit both a 20D and 30D. However, the older 20D brackets will not fit a 30D. When the 30D was first released, RRS said the 20D bracket would work on the 30D. However, they didn't take into account the larger LCD screen on the 30D. Because the 30D has the larger LCD, the buttons are moved slightly to the left of where they are on the 20D.

I had a friend that installed the 20D (w/grip) RRS L plate on his 30D (w/grip). This caused the 20D bracket to rub on the raised edge of the camera next to the buttons. By the time he realized what was happening, all the black had rubbed off the camera under the bracket, lowering the resale value of the camera. RRS subsequently modified the bracket and is marketing it for both the 20D and30D. If you look at the RRS catalog you'll see the BGE2-L30 bracket is undercut where the bracket curves out to clear the remote socket. This is where the design was altered for the 30D.

The 40D (w/grip) bracket is another design altogether. Because Canon chose to change the orientation of the remote socket on the 40D, the RRS L bracket for it is entirely different.

It would be possible for someone with metal working skills to accomplish the same modification to an older 20D bracket, but they would have to be careful to remove just enough metal to clear the camera and not weaken the bracket.
