Also I have the delimma of needing a tripod, I am going to set up a studio and get into some outdoor stuff and need a sturdy tripod, that dont feel cheap or weak that I can use.. no panning or action stuff, just like shooting non-moving objects or models..

I have the 1DmkIIn and several L glass, see gear at signature so it will hold that all well, prefer under $300 or less..

Thanks..

I saw the other thread but did not want to thread jack his..

One of the most recommended setups seems to be the Bogen/Manfrotto 3021 tripod with the 488rc2 ballhead. The combo runs around $250-$275.

You can also get a knock off Dynatran tripod on Ebay from the seller Amvona.com. They're very sturdy and can be had for less than 100 bucks. The shipping is high, but that's not bad when you can get the tripod for around 50 bucks.

Is a ball head more sturdy or a pan/tilt head?

In my opinion, both are about as sturdy as long as you have equivalent sizes. However, a ball head is a LOT more compact for carrying. It fits into a case better and is much easier to carry across your back without the handles sticking into your neck.

It is my opinion that a ball head is also a lot faster to use for most common work.

With the equipment in your sig, I would look into getting a ball head from either Arca, Markin, Kirk or RRS

Markin M10 or Arca Z1 sp for your set up. These run $350 but will support the 100-400 better than the bogen ball head. This plus the tripod of your choice.
