Battery grip/housing

I'm thinking about purchasing the battery grip/holder for my 30D. I was just curious...I know the 'male' piece inserts into the camera body below where you normally house the camera battery. So what happens to the tab that normally closes over the body when not using the accessory? Do you remove it all together?

are you talking about the battery cover? if so, you remove it all the way and the grip has a place to store the cover inside of it. pretty nifty if you ask me... the directions that come with the canon grip show you how to do it

Yes, you do, and there's a place to store it in the grip so you don't lose it.
