This is a substitute for the Wimberley or Jobu Gimbal Head---
Would you take on chance on this gear? Seems like a really good deal???

I don't know how much $275.00 means to you, but it's only "a really good deal" if the quality is there. Like the old carnival midway saying goes: "You pays your money, you takes your choice." Not for me, but I hope someone with some hands-on experience can give you advice on this.

it looks a lot like this one http://www.luminous-landscape.com/reviews/accessories/wimberley.shtml
but of course could be a knock-off

I wouldn't spend a four figure sum on a super tele and then balance it on an unproven head. It may turn out to be excellent and it may also snap off and drop your heavy lens on the floor. Are you going to be the one to find out which?

This looks to me like a used Genuine Wimberely WH-101 (old version 1) Full Gimbal Head, not a substitute. At least this is what the picture shows. $275 for a used genuine Wimberely head looks like a good deal provided that:
1. This isn't a scam
2. That the head is in good condition.

From what I've gathered, it's a knockoff or copy and I'm thinking that unless it has a proven record, one is taking an awful chance supporting expensive and heavy gear.
I tend to think it's best to go with the real deal---

I believe Roger who owns www.lensrentals.com has one for rent. You might want to ask him his opinion.

I do indeed have one. I had been using a Manfrotto full gimbal head and a Wimberley Sidekick and thought I'd give this a go. I must say its really well made - very solid, a bit heavier than I expected but moves very smoothly and easily. I put a 400 f 2.8 on it with a 1DsII body and swung it around quite a bit and found it was superb - moved easily but stayed where I put it and I felt it had minimal vibration - dampened almost immediately after moving.
Now, for full disclosure I've never used a real Wimberly head so I suppose that might be even better, but this one is plenty good enough for me. I just ordered a second one.
