Hi all, about to purchase a canon 500mm from kerso and i was wondering is there a backpack/bag that you could recommend to carry the 500 + 30d, 100-400, 18-55 kit lens and a tripod and beanie or should i just take the car?
Any helpwould be appreciated.
Cheers

I have the 300 f.28 and the 500 and 600 f/4 lenses. I'm not trying to tell you how to pack your gear around but using the long lenses is usually a special occurence. I have mine separated into individual bags and carry my bodies and other small lenses, like the 100-400 in a separate backpack. I certainly find it easier to do it this way.
I currently have the Lowepro (http://lowepro.com/Products/Backpacks/allWeather/Lens_Trekker_600_AW.aspx) Trekker 600 AW bag for both the 500 and 600. They work great.
If I had it to do all over again I might look at Tenba (http://www.tenbagear.com/products/2000_01_ll600.asp) bags. I actually have one of these on order for my 300. I saw one in a store in Las Vegas and it looked better than the lowepro bags.

If i have to trek a long way i use a lowepro trekker 600aw to carry my 500mm lens, i also put a pouch/pod strapped on to the side if i need to take either my 100-400 lens or 300mm f4 lens on one side and my 1548 gitzo strapped to the other side. the camera with a wide angle lens is usually round my neck. on the back outside is a small pouch to hold some extras and i do tend to carefully pack some things around the lens inside. it works well for me.
if i'm walking short distances( anything up to about 7 miles ) i usually carry the 500mm lens on camera body but keep a showerproof/dust bag/jacket to slipover it if neccesary, and all other camera bits and spare camera+ lense in a tamarac 7 rucksack.
both these option work for me ( all be it rather heavy at times)
